Bulletin Board
We worked as a group on this bulletin board and I think it turned out great! We wanted to use a growth mindset theme. We included some inspirational quotes which I think really added to the overall presentation of the bulletin board.

Line Drawings
Wow, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this first class. I have never been a fan of Art throughout my education as I have never felt naturally artistic however, I have challenged myself to try as hard as possible throughout this course. I truly enjoyed the videos that were shown in class (Dr.Who - Van Gogh episode and By All Means Create - Opus). They showed me that art can have a lasting impression and that everyone who is struggling as an artist needs to face their fears and persevere. The upside drawing had me incredibly nervous to begin but once I had completed it and turned the picture right side up - I couldn't believe I had actually drawn a horse! It gave me some confidence and eased my art anxiety. Our assignment this week was to do a line drawing of an object at home and I have to say, I ripped out multiple pages until I was content with what I had drawn. See below for the various sketches I've done so far in this first week.

Dance, Drama, and Music
Dance was one of the first classes we had. I thought it was interesting however, I don't feel like I necessarily learned how to incorporate dance lessons into my teaching practice. I would absolutely use dance as a form of brain breaks or transitions and possibly in a gym lesson. I do think it was interesting that she was a parent of kids that are currently in school and was able to show us things from that perspective but I feel like it was a little bit disconnected as we didn't know why we were dancing from YouTube videos.
I found the drama class to be quite a bit more interactive as we were able to learn why it is important to include various activities. Some of the activities he taught us were great transition activities or great activities to use to help calm the class down or get them excited. He had a great presence about him that I found engaging and made me a lot more interested in hearing what he had to teach. I hope I have the opportunity to cross paths with him again. I was extremely terrified of Drama and having to teach it, however, he showed me that I can incorporate it in a non-threatening way.
Trina came in to our class two times and I found her quite engaging. She had a ton of advice to give to us which I loved. I love hearing real life experiences from teachers. I wish we would have gotten more information about incorporating music into our classroom and our teaching. She definitely helped us plan for our presentation for the professors. I am not excited about having to present a play for the professors because I would rather use the class time to learn art skills and how to teach Fine Arts. My hesitation is also because I am not comfortable acting or doing drama myself. I think Trina would be a great resource to reach out to if I ever need support regarding music and drama.

Gesture Drawing
I thought this activity was very fun. It was a neat idea to watch a video and have it be paused sporadically and have to do a quick sketch of the person. I think I did a good job of quickly capturing the direction and pose of each person I had to sketch. This would be a fun activity to do with my future students.

Draw a Cat for a Friend
I liked this activity because it was highly individual and each one of us made a very different looking cat. This was a cute activity that I would like to use in my classroom because I love how each one of us created our own version of a cat.

Shade and Form
This was a challenging assignment for me; I had a hard time shading so that they all looked like they were getting light from the same source. This would have been nice to have a more in depth lesson on just so I could have understood the concept of shading a bit more.

Reflection on the Art Gala
Overall, the Art Gala was a great idea. I wish it was planned out a little bit more and that we had more notice of things we needed to do such as supply activities, music and snacks. It ended up looking great but with more notice and more direction I would have enjoyed it a little bit more. I was very proud to show off some of the hard work my students did while I was in practicum and I loved seeing what my peers did for an art project while in their own practicums. I feel like I got a ton of great art project ideas that I would absolutely use in my future classrooms. I did not have any students come to the Art Gala and I was a little bit disappointed by this; I did tell my coaching teacher to remind the students about it but I am not sure if he was able to do that or not. I thought the Art Gala was a nice way to showcase our art lessons that were completed in practicum and it was a nice to have it be done as an public event rather than just sharing our work in the our classroom.

Complementary Colours
This was a neat activity, I tried to keep with a nature/floral theme and do all of my pairings as either a flower or a leaf. I would create an activity similar to this while teaching complementary colours in my future classes.

Art inspired by Ted Harrison
I loved this activity! Ted Harrison seems to be an artist that many teachers create lessons inspired by. I like the way mine turned out but I wanted to create more texture in my mountains and I found it was hard for me to do using the paints. I do like the way the water turned out as it seems to have a bit more texture than the rest of the painting. This was fun to do and I love how each one of us had a very different scene that we painted but that they all looked like they were inspired by Ted Harrison's art.

First Nations Art
It was really cool to see how Aboriginal art can be incorporated into lessons for students. I love that we were able to create some of the symbols that are commonly used in Aboriginal art and then be able to create our own animal painting inspired by this style of art. I love how my salmon turned out; the bold colours that are traditionally used really make this art stand out. I would do this in my own classroom but would ask for the Aboriginal Support Worker in my school to help me facilitate this style of art.

Simplification
I love how this fox turned out! I used Simplification to create this fox and it reminded me of the upside down line drawing we did. I love how simple lines can come together to create an image. I would use this strategy in future art lessons.

Oil Pastels - Inspired by Emily Carr
I absolutely love using oil pastels, I think you can create such unique textures within your art. I liked the video that was shown in class and I've included it in this blog. I learned so many new strategies that you can use for oil pastels and I tried to use some of those strategies in my art inspired by Emily Carr's use of trees. I like the textures I was able to achieve in this art. I used oil pastels for my big art project in my practicum. The students were given Q-tips and paper towel as tools to use for blending/smudging. Oil pastels will definitely be a staple in my future classrooms.

"A Grinchy Growth Mindset"
I think the play turned out great and that the audience enjoyed it. I have to admit, I was not looking forward to this play. I know it was a part of our art mark, however I wish we would have used that class time to learn more art skills and activities we could use in our future classrooms. I would have preferred to take some more time within class to learn about different artists and lessons we could use instead of rehearsing for this play. I appreciate the time some of the other students took in preparing for this script, the roles, and the costumes. Overall, I think the play was cute but maybe not a necessary part of our art class. |
