I had always been aware of the damaging impacts chronic stress can have on a person's overall well-being but I never truly realized the devastating and lasting effects chronic stress and an excess of Glucocorticoids can have on internal factors such as DNA and Gene Expression. The image above demonstrates the brain under a normal stress response and the damaging impacts that chronic stress has on the brain.
Essentially, the longer a person is exposed to chronic stress, the less they are able to respond and manage the stress. This is due to damage done by an excess of cortisol and glucocorticoids. Please explore the following boxes below to learn more about the devastating effects chronic stress and early adversity can have on people.
From a teacher's perspective - it is extremely important to be aware of the stress our students are under. It is also important for us to be aware of any childhood or early trauma or adversity our students may have.
